Overview:

Nowadays in modern community, Barrier Free Access (BFA) has become a highly concerned needs for the elderly and for the people with disability and physical limitations.

Because of this, Hong Kong SAR Government has been carrying out Barrier Free Access projects for all its public premises and facilities and encourages private sectors and institutions to carry the same accessibility for the needs.  Hence, the Code of Practice (COP) have been made by Buildings Department to standardize the design requirements for building industry needs: Design Manual - Barrier Free Access 2008 (Click here for a Chinese Version).

Reasons for having Barrier Free Access in public premises and facilities:

  • Social Responsibility for the Elderly and for the People in Physical Limitations

  • Equal Opportunities for the Disability for Public Usage

  • Anti-Discrimination for Common Accessible Area

  • Better Living Environments for Community
